Second day in AUSSSSIEEE

Home Sick

I am really home sick but hanging out with my friends was really helpful. This morning one of my roommates in the hostel offered me some toast. She is from Holland and is also studying at the same school as me. I went downstairs to the kitchen with her and ate breakfast. I was a little nervous to eat with her. Only because I did not want to do something that is typical of an American and have her judge me but in the end I forgot about my worries and enjoyed my breakfast with her. I really like my new friends Alyssa and Betty. Betty is from Taiwan; she is the girl with the toothpaste that says “ black person” on it in Chinese. I think they use that slogan because black people have really white teeth.

The City

The city looked like any other city. But it is still really pretty.

The mall was a little different but only because the stores were different. The market was freaking me out a bit since all the food was named different things. Oh yah, there is also one more difference, everything is freaking expensive!!!!!!

Home sick

I went into target and I bought shampoo and conditioner for $10 each! Isn’t that just crazy?! I am glad I brought everything else I needed from home. Food is also really expensive but for some reason Asian food is around the same price as it is in the US. My friends and I decided to eat Japanese food. It was fairly cheap. I have a feeling I will be eating a lot of Asian food in the next couple months I am here.

Alyssa and I were so depressed with the whole everything being a billion dollars thing so we decided to be super cheap for dinner and breakfast and bought a bag of pasta and sauce for $3. Since we split it, we only spent $1.50 each for both dinner and breakfast. Freaking overpriced everything…. We shall fight the system!!!!

All kinds of people

In the hostel, I have met people from all over the world! It’s so cool. I have met people from Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Holland, Scotland, Ireland, and the east side of Australia. Its fun talking to them and learning about why they came to Australia.

Australian National League (Australian Football)

Alyssa and I went to the hostel’s living room to watch tv with a group of people from Australia. They were watching Australian football. It is like a mix between soccer, football, and rugby. It’s really weird. The players do not wear any padding but they still hit and tackle each other! How retarded can they be?!?! I asked one of the Australians what he thought about American football with all the padding and he said it was silly. Hmph… how rude. Australian football is so difficult to watch. They kick, punch, and toss the ball, but they are not aloud to throw the ball. … urg headache. Well, I also discovered that I was on the same plane flight with 1 of the 8 professional football teams in Australia! I saw a team of tall buff but yet still lean guys come on my plane with red jerseys. I could not tell what sport they played since their body type was different from other sport players. It was like a combination of a soccer player, track runner, and football player all mashed together. I did not think they were anybody so I just ignored them. Turns out, they are professionals! AGH!!!! I should have asked for a picture. I fail at life.

Naked man with a gun on billboard

Sooooo rumor is going around the hostel that there is a naked man who is standing on a billboard waving a gun around just a couple blocks from my hostel. WEIRD. Found out later the police arrested him. Nice

Accents

I am starting to get use to the whole different accent thing. I do not even really notice it anymore. But it still throws me off when I hear an Asian person or Indian person with an Australian accent. They have people of all races here. Reminds me of America.

Guys

They are good looking but not my type. They are like… buff white guys. I think my sister Jen would like it here. She has a thing for surfer white dudes that have accents.

Weather

Weather is so nice here! Its winter but its not even that cold! I cannot wait for spring. Since my school is right on a bay and a few minutes from the beach, I’m going to go to the beach almost all the time! It seems like I like schools by the beach. I just cannot stay away from them!

Well, its now 6:42 AM and I have been up since 6 AM. I am starting to get use to the time difference. Thank GOD! I cannot believe that the sun is not even up yet!! Ah! Hurry up sun!

You'll find that Australian football really isn't hard to understand once you have a few basic rules. For some help see http://www.afana.com and fellow Americans will help! We have a downloadable guide to the game at http://www.afana.com/drupal5/aflguide
